ABOUT PLATFORM TOOLSMITH
The term comes from an old software engineering role: the person who builds tools that make the rest of the team faster. Not the flashy features—the scripts, utilities, and automation that multiply everyone else's output.
In modern platform engineering, that role has evolved. A Platform Toolsmith operates at the infrastructure layer—building internal developer platforms, golden paths, and self-service systems. But there's another dimension: making architecture executable. Turning ADRs into fitness functions. Building systems that enforce architectural decisions automatically, so architects can scale beyond meetings and documents.
This blog is named for that intersection: architecture that ships as code, not just specs.
Platform Toolsmith is a blog for engineers who believe architecture should ship, not just spec.
This is the counterweight to ivory-tower architecture teams—the ones who design systems they never operate, write ADRs nobody reads, and call governance "platform engineering."
Here, you'll find:
- Build logs — Real implementations, including the failures.
- Patterns — Reusable approaches extracted from production systems.
- Opinions — Hard-won takes on platform eng and technical leadership.
No theory without code. No architecture without artifacts.
Who's Behind This
I'm Alex Castro — a Platform Architect at a Chicago fintech who still writes code.
While most architects stop at diagrams and meetings, I stay close to the keyboard—building the platforms, tools, and automation that make architectural decisions self-enforcing. Built or integrated—whatever makes the team more productive.
15+ years building systems that handle real money. Currently leading platform architecture for a company processing billions in transactions.
I started Platform Toolsmith because the best platform content comes from people actively building—not consultants packaging frameworks.
Key Areas
- Platform Engineering: Internal developer platforms, golden paths, self-service infrastructure.
- Software Architecture: Executable architecture, fitness functions, event-driven systems, resilience patterns.
- Developer Experience: Reducing friction, tooling that delights, making the right path the easy path.
- AI Engineering: Pragmatic AI tooling, not hype-driven PoCs.
- Fintech Systems: Trading platforms, payment processing, regulatory compliance.
- Technical Leadership: Staff+ career paths, architecture reviews, team scaling.
- DevOps & SRE: CI/CD pipelines, observability stacks, incident response automation.
- Cloud-Native: AWS, Google Cloud, Cloudflare ecosystems, container orchestration, infrastructure-as-code at scale.
Work With Me
- Speaking — Platform engineering, architecture automation, developer experience
- Collaboration — Open source, technical writing, podcasts
- Mentoring — Helping engineers navigate senior → staff+ transitions
Mentoring
I mentor engineers navigating the transition from senior to staff+ roles. Sessions focus on technical leadership, platform engineering, and career strategy—especially for those in infrastructure and architecture roles where impact is invisible until something breaks.
I also help architects move beyond documents—learning to build systems that make their decisions stick.
